Press Release Body = New Delhi, 18 April, 2007: The Honourable Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, Shri. Kapil Sibal today awarded medals and distinguished awards to three former students of International Management Institute (IMI) for their outstanding performance and their distinguished achievements in their respective fields. The honours were bestowed at the 23rd Annual Convocation of IMI starting 5:30 p.m.
While giving his convocation address, Shri Kapil Sibbal emphasized that for 'a country of the size of India, with its religions and ethnic diversities, the key policy challenge is to boost productivity and growth through increased knowledge-intensive economic activities while maintaining our social structure and cohesion. The unfolding scenario thus calls for instruments and policies that are responsive to the new global environment but are rooted in our rich local ethos' The Minister noted the vigorous pace of technological change in today's dynamic environment and highlighted the need to better understand how all the institutions and actors in the 'National Innovation System' interact. The need for this understanding derives from the fact that productivity increases are the only sustainable way to improve living standards for citizens. . He was, however, uncertain about Governments capacity to address systemic failures that can emerge say from mismatches between different components of the innovation system, conflicting incentives for market and non-market institutions etc. According to the Minister, we need to 'consider what organizational innovations are needed to bridge the gap between the management systems in the government and the progressive corporate sector. These are a few of the areas where we seek policy inputs and advice from institutions like IMI.' For the students, the Ministers advice was simple and focused. "This degree of yours is, a blunt but effective instrument to put the world in to shape. So go forth and build something with it. It is a great time to be in India and to be of your generation. So good luck in shaping the world and your life." Shri R.P. Goenka, Chairman and Board of Directors, IMI presented the Post Graduate Diplomas in all the different programmes held at IMI.
